Elevators can make your energy costs go up. Or down

With increasing concern about gas consumption and fossil fuel emissions from cars and trucks on our roads, we should also consider the need for greener, more energy-efficient vertical transportation within our buildings and cities. After all, more than half the world’s population currently lives in cities–and that number is expected to hit 70% by 2050.* Elevators consume 2-10% of a building’s energy 30% of that energy is used inefficiently or unnecessarily So how is the elevator industry responding to being more energy efficient and green? In new construction, there are new technologies and techniques that reduce energy usage – from rethinking the design and construction of elevator shafts to the directions that elevators travel. Here at Allied Elevator, we’re focusing

Compliance. Plain and (Not So) Simple

In the US, we travel 2.55 billion miles a year by vertical transportation. In elevators alone, we take 18 billion trips. So of course, there would be the highest standards in place to ensure public safety. Which is why routine elevator service and maintenance serves a purpose beyond functionality and repairs. It’s called compliance. Each state has its own list of codes and requirements, in addition to the requirements laid out by the Americans with Disabilities Act and the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) which updates its elevator safety requirements every three years. Commercial ADA Provisions for Elevators The ADA understands that some adjustments are not readily achievable. However, if they can be completed at a minor cost or

OSHA 10 + 30 = SAFETY

When most people get up to go to work, they think about things like meetings on their schedule, vacation days they haven’t used up, and whether they’ll have to make the first pot of coffee. They don’t, however, have to think about their own safety in order to do their job. For a certain percentage of the work force however, people like crane operators, roofers, ironworkers and yes, elevator mechanics, staying safe is a part of their daily life. I’ll stick with the elevator analogy because it’s what I know best. Elevators are an essential part of life especially if you live and work in, or around, a city. And like any elevator company, passenger safety is our top priority.

#GoClean. #BeGreen.

A couple of weeks ago, the world celebrated Earth Day 2021. While the effects of global warming continued to dominate much of the conversation, Allied spent the day bringing to light how a little-known technology, oil reconditioning, is not only good for elevators but also good for the earth. Oil is what makes any hydraulic elevator run. Think of it as its mechanical lifeblood. Without oil, you basically have a box sitting at the bottom of a tall shaft. It’s the fluid that does all the heavy lifting from moving cars and passengers to reducing friction and transferring heat away from moving parts to keep the machinery cool and lubricated. Many, if not most mechanical breakdowns, can be traced to

Like solutions on speed dial.

Problem? No Problem. How many elevator service companies can say that with complete confidence? Not as many as you might think. Basically, a breakdown of an elevator is akin to an emergency. When it stops working, your business, hotel, hospital, restaurant or home, kind of stop working too. Or work a lot less efficiently. In this situation, you need three things pronto: A great team. A diagnosis. A fix.  So you could say Allied is like your (elevator service) 911. We take the trouble out of troubleshooting. When you’ve got a dedicated team who knows your elevator inside and out, that’s really helpful when service is needed. Why? Because your tech is super familiar with your equipment, and the status

A convent and an elevator. How one saved the other.

Random of acts of kindness are something we’ve been hearing about a lot during the pandemic. A gentle reminder we are all in this together. Especially in our local communities. So we all help  when we can, either with resources or skills or both. This was the case when a convent of eight nuns, all in their eighties and nineties, had an elevator on the fritz and many stairs to climb each evening to go to bed. Allied first helped The Daughters of Our Lady of The Sacred Heart in Bellmawr, New Jersey back in 2008, when they relocated to a new building and needed an elevator installed. It was the same year Tim Lowry and his family created a

Where There’s Smoke and Fire, There Should Be A Plan

A building fire is every Property Manager’s nightmare (among some others, but we’ll stop here). Being prepared to manage your building – the staff, occupants, and systems — during an emergency, is the best way to mitigate fire damage, keep everyone safe, and expedite the return to normal operation. A frequent question I get is “what happens to elevators during an emergency,” when there’s smoke, a real fire in the building, or a false alarm?  “Where do they go?” It’s an important question that brings together emergency planning and staff training, an understanding of the technical programming of an elevator for emergency response, and an understanding of how elevators are to behave in your building, based on your building’s unique

Real service. Not lip service.

In my mind, service is like a security blanket. You kind of get a warm, fuzzy feeling knowing you’re just a phone call away from help if something goes wrong with a car in your building. Let’s face it, something at some point, will go wrong. Law of probabilities and all that. At Allied, we like to say, we never forget why it’s called a Service Contract. For us, this translates to: we’ve got your back, copy that, firm handshake, we’re not going to leave you high and dry, Service Contract. This ideology was top of mind when we created what we consider to be one of the most comprehensive Service Contracts in the elevator industry. Allied was started by

Each Allied Hour Adds Up to so Much More. Lucky You.

What’s your hourly rate? This is a question I get asked by building owners and property managers on a regular basis. Since everyone is conscientious about costs, it’s definitely a fair question to ask. Depends what’s included in that hour right? That’s where the true value is. It’s easy to think elevator service companies are pretty much created equal, with industry service and rates. What’s key is to look at what’s behind the numbers. The truth is, an Allied Hour benefits your building in a way you might not have imagined. Simply put, an hour of our time adds up to more because of all we include in each one. We book fewer service calls each month Great service and
