#GoClean. #BeGreen.

A couple of weeks ago, the world celebrated Earth Day 2021. While the effects of global warming continued to dominate much of the conversation, Allied spent the day bringing to light how a little-known technology, oil reconditioning, is not only good for elevators but also good for the earth.

Oil is what makes any hydraulic elevator run. Think of it as its mechanical lifeblood. Without oil, you basically have a box sitting at the bottom of a tall shaft. It’s the fluid that does all the heavy lifting from moving cars and passengers to reducing friction and transferring heat away from moving parts to keep the machinery cool and lubricated. Many, if not most mechanical breakdowns, can be traced to bad fluid.

So what exactly is “bad fluid”? It is hydraulic oil that has degraded over time from use and contains contaminants like gritty metals, dirt, and water, making it increasingly inefficient. Now, however, there’s an earth-friendly alternative. Instead of dumping those 150 gallons of oil, you can recondition them instead. Not only is this better for the environment but also for the well-being of your elevator.

Elevator oil can be tested, and with a special filter, cleaned of contaminants in just 3-5 weeks. No downtime, no interruption of service. By eliminating contaminants, you can add up to 10 years to the
life of your elevator. Plus, it’s better than just putting in new oil because whatever contaminants were there, to begin with, could still be circulating through your elevator.

Now that you know the benefits of oil reconditioning, you might consider having your elevator oil tested. On-site oil testing is just one of the many services Allied offers to keep elevators in top condition. Check your maintenance contract to see if scientific testing of your elevator’s fluid is
covered.

From a sustainability standpoint, reconditioned oil is a complete game-changer for the industry. Good for elevators, good for the earth. Who can argue with that?
